Raba said to Rafram b. Papa: Tell me some of the good deeds which R. Huna had done. He replied: Of his childhood I do not recollect anything, but of his old age I do. On cloudy [stormy] days they used to drive him about in a golden carriage and he would survey every part of the city and he would order the demolition of any wall that was unsafe; if the owner was in a position to do so he had to rebuild it himself, but if not, then [R. Huna] would have it rebuilt at his own expense. אמר ליה רבא לרפרם בר פפא: לימא לן מר מהני מילי מעלייתא דהוה עביד רב הונא! - אמר ליה: בינקותיה לא דכירנא, בסיבותיה דכירנא: דכל יומא דעיבא הוו מפקין ליה בגהרקא דדהבא, וסייר לה לכולה מתא, וכל אשיתא דהוות רעיעתא - הוה סתר לה. אי אפשר למרה - בני לה, ואי לא אפשר - בני לה איהו מדידיה. וכל פניא דמעלי שבתא הוה משדר שלוחא לשוקא, וכל ירקא דהוה פייש להו לגינאי - זבין ליה, ושדי ליה לנהרא. - וליתביה לעניים! - זמנין דסמכא דעתייהו, ולא אתו למיזבן. ולשדייה לבהמה! קסבר מאכל אדם אין מאכילין לבהמה. ולא ליזבניה כלל! - נמצאת מכשילן לעתיד לבא.

Our Rabbis taught: If at the present time a man desires to become a convert… [He] is given instruction in some of the minor and some of the major commandments. He is informed of the sin [of neglecting the commandments of] gleanings, the forgotten sheaf, the corner and the poor man's tithe. R. Judah, R. Jose, and R. Simeon were sitting and Judah ben Gerim was sitting near them. R. Judah began [the discussion] by observing, ‘How fine are the works of the Romans! They have made streets, they have built bridges, they have erected baths.’ R. Jose was silent. R. Simeon b. Yohai answered and said, ‘All that they made they made for themselves; they built market-places, to set harlots in them; baths, to rejuvenate themselves; bridges, to levy tolls for them.’ Now Judah ben Gerim went and related their talk and word of it reached the government. דיתבי רבי יהודה ורבי יוסי ורבי שמעון, ויתיב יהודה בן גרים גבייהו. פתח רבי יהודה ואמר: כמה נאים מעשיהן של אומה זו: תקנו שווקים, תקנו גשרים, תקנו מרחצאות. רבי יוסי שתק. נענה רבי שמעון בן יוחאי ואמר: כל מה שתקנו - לא תקנו אלא לצורך עצמן, תקנו שווקין - להושיב בהן זונות, מרחצאות - לעדן בהן עצמן, גשרים - ליטול מהן מכס. הלך יהודה בן גרים וסיפר דבריהם, ונשמעו למלכות. אמרו: יהודה שעילה - יתעלה, יוסי ששתק - יגלה לציפורי, שמעון שגינה - יהרג. אזל הוא ובריה טשו בי מדרשא. כל יומא הוה מייתי להו דביתהו ריפתא וכוזא דמיא וכרכי. כי תקיף גזירתא, אמר ליה לבריה: נשים דעתן קלה עליהן, דילמא מצערי לה ומגליא לן.

Hiya bar Ada was sitting before Rav. [Rav] would explain the matter to him, but [Hiya bar Ada] was not able to understand. [Rav] said to him, "Why aren't you understanding?" When God created the first man, God showed him all the trees in the Garden of Eden and said, ‘See how beautiful and perfect are My creations! All that I have created, I created for you. Therefore, be mindful so that you do not abuse or destroy My world. For if you abuse or destroy it, there is no one to repair it after you.' בשעה שברא הקב"ה את אדם הראשון נטלו והחזירו על כל אילני גן עדן ואמר לו ראה מעשי כמה נאים ומשובחין הן וכל מה שבראתי בשבילך בראתי, תן דעתך שלא תקלקל ותחריב את עולמי, שאם קלקלת אין מי שיתקן אחריך.

The praise of the midwives here goes beyond the praise given them in the first part of the verse. Not only did they not do what Pharoah told them, but they even dared to do deeds of kindness for the children they saved. On behalf of poor mothers, the midwives would go to the houses of rich mothers and collect water and food, which they gave to poor mothers and thus kept their children alive. [UJA] מלמד שתבע אותן להזדווג להם ולא קבלו ממנו, ותחיין את הילדים, וכי מאחר שלא עשו כאשר דבר אליהן אין אנו יודעין שקיימו את הילדים, למה הוצרך הכתוב לומר ותחיין את הילדים, יש קילוס בתוך קילוס לא דיין שלא קיימו את דבריו אלא עוד הוסיפו לעשות עמהם טובות, יש מהם שהיו עניות והולכות המילדות ומגבות מים ומזון מבתיהם של עשירות ובאות ונותנות לעניות, והן מחיות את בניהן, הוא שכתוב ותחיין את הילדים, ד"א ותחיין את הילדים

One may not dig a cistern close to the cistern of another, nor a trench, nor a vault, nor a water channel, nor a washer-man's pool, unless it is three tefahim distant from the wall of the other, and he must plaster it with lime. Seeds, the plough and urine must be three tefahim away from the wall. לא יחפור אדם בור סמוך לבורו של חבירו ולא שיח ולא מערה ולא אמת המים ולא נברכת כובסין אלא אם כן הרחיק מכותל חבירו שלשה טפחים וסד בסיד מרחיקין את הגפת ואת הזבל ואת המלח ואת הסיד ואת הסלעים מכותלו של חבירו שלשה טפחים וסד בסיד מרחיקין את הזרעים ואת המחרישה ואת מי רגלים מן הכותל שלשה טפחים ומרחיקין את הרחים שלשה מן השכב שהן ארבעה מן הרכב ואת התנור שלשה מן הכליא שהן ארבעה מן השפה:
