You must not rule over him [your slave] to crush him:

Unnecessary labor, in order to torment the slave. Do not say to the slave: "Warm this glass for me," while not needing it; "Hoe beneath this vine until I come." Perhaps you think that there is no one who can tell whether [the work] is necessary or not, and I will tell him (the slave) that it is necessary? Behold, this thing is given over to his (the master's) heart, and therefore it is said: "and you shall fear [your God]."
